As soon as I turned off my laptop and turned on my tv, I learned the Patriots reached an agreement with OG Stephen Neal. While not an elite player at his position, he's been solid for the Pats for years at right guard. Now New England has to get Logan Mankins signed.

When Adalius Thomas went on the radio airwaves a couple weeks ago he shed just a little light on what exactly went wrong with him and the Patriots in 2009. Apparently it all started after the first game of the season, the home opener against the Buffalo Bills, which saw the Tom Brady pull of the greatest fourth quarter comeback of his career. Thomas said that Coach Belichick met with him after the game to express that his play was substandard and from there things went down hill fast.

The Indianapolis Colts will play the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV on February 7 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
The contest is expected to be an offensive shootout pitting Colts (16-2) quarterback Peyton Manning against Saints (15-3) signal-caller Drew Brees.

1. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick should feel honored. New England’s defense used the “everyone stand around” pass rush. It was first introduced when the Patriots played against Drew Bledsoe in 2002. Years later it was used against QB Tom Brady. I think it was the New York Jets when coached by Eric Mangini that turned the tables. That’s good company to be in for Fitzpatrick.

Imagine a transcript of a conversation between the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills. Only the Pats' words had been recorded:
Oh my goodness…is that who I think it is? Oh snap! Buffalo Bills! I can’t believe it’s you! It’s so good to see you! How long has it been? A couple of months or something, right? Since week one? Daaaaaaaaaaamn! That long? Man, time really flies, right? Fo’ real!

OLB Clay Matthews. DE Larry English. CB Alphonso Smith. Just a few of the names projected as players the New England Patriots would draft with the 23rd overall pick. Instead the Pats traded out of the first round, stockpiled more picks, and used all four second round picks.

Hopefully RB Laurence Maroney doesn’t think he’s off the hook after rushing for 123 yards (7.7 average) and a score. If anything, the expectations have gone up. It’s nice to see you blow up in one game as the undisputed primary ball carrier. But can you do this week after week after week?

Hello, and welcome to week one of the NFL season.
No, I haven’t been in a cave for the week. But like the Patriots, I’m forgetting about the season opener.
Was the home team that bad? No, not really. There were a couple of highlights (QB Tom Brady and the secondary), but everywhere else there was plenty of room for improvement: inability to gain first downs on short yardage runs, dropped passes, lack of a pass rush, etc.

Pre-season predictions are probably one of my favorite things about the NFL off-season. I love this time so much because it absolutely validates my opinions of specific football analyst as well as football analysis as a whole. I mean seriously, has anyone listened to Mark Schlereth talk football. I’ll credit him on being a handsome and well spoken former football player, but he is no analyst. Same goes for “Dat Dude” Marcellus Wiley. I know he went to an Ivy League school, but I’m starting to seriously question this guy’s football intelligence. But I am digressing. Pre-season predictions are great because nearly everyone is wrong at the end of the season (not just Mark and Marc…that would be a great show huh?). There might be one or two people that actually predict the outcome of the Super Bowl, but to try and anticipate what will happen at the top end of the National Football League is nearly impossible. Notice I say “top end” because there are some teams that are guaranteed to be at the bottom of the food chain: Lions, Raiders, Rams, Bills, Chiefs, Broncos, Buccaneers, etc. But, predicting who will make the playoffs and who will ultimately win the Super Bowl is about as close to a crapshoot as you can get in professional sports. This is why I like that the Dallas Cowboys are ranked no higher than 15th on any major power rankings.

We'll get back to horse racing soon. This is a lull in the season. Now, even the horse players are focused on the NFL. Who will be better? Who will be worse.
In this analysis, I simply take what the teams had, what they lost and gained, and weigh all the potentials. For example, 3 first and second round draft pick linebackers in their third year would translate into at least 2 successes.

1. Well, Brett Favre is back. Just as he started to drift out of our minds again, BAM, breaking news on ESPN: "Favre is a Viking." As obnoxious as this story has been for the last three years, it sure will make the Vikings vs. Packers games more interesting, especially the November 1st game when he returns to Lambeau Field. My guess is the reaction will be half cheers, half boos from the fans, all boos from Ted Thompson.

Not that you should be too concerned with the outcome, but the Chicago Bears lost in their first preseason outing last night to the Buffalo Bills in a score of 27 – 20. It's that time of year again folks. Time to start predicting the unpredictable. Will any of the Denver Broncos running backs get enough carries to warrant a spot on your roster? Can Michael Turner replicate last season's performance and warrant the second overall pick in your draft? What will Terrell Owens's numbers look like now that he is in Buffalo? And how does that impact Trent Edwards value as the Bills' QB? Who am I taking if I get the first pick? What if I get stuck at the end of the first round? Do I snatch up two running backs? Or should I go one running back and also nab a top tier receiver?

Just want to throw this out there for discussion fodder. Fitzpatrick may not be a bad backup at QB. I know this isn't a major conern for Bills fans, but I always thought Losman was a joke. Fitz may not be your everyday QB, but I didn't think he was bad in the HoF game against the Titans (or was it the Oilers?) Sunday. Heck, he's gotta be smart. Didn't he play at Harvard? Not that I really want to focus on the backup QB.

The Bills have finished 7 and 9 three years in a row. It may become four. The team looks great and shaky offensively at the same time. The no huddle offense is a new addition and so is Terrell Owens. So, you can expect big things. The downside is that 2 rookies are starting on an already shaky offensive line.

There's a saying about every sport that goes "Love the game first, the league second, your team third, and the players last". This saying poignantly displays that all fans are interconnected by their love for the game, no matter which team they support. In an effort to stimulate debate with the critics, who seem to like to engage in a strategy known as "closing down the debate," this is a list of all the reasons Terrell Owens will fare far better in Buffalo than he has on any other team. Also, there may be a point or two regarding why his acquisition was intelligent on the part of Buffalo. Here goes (and I sure do hope I am right):

Well, the first wave of free agency has passed, and the Browns didn't jump in. It appears to me that the Browns don't have a lot of room under the cap to sign high-priced free agents.
Leaving: Kellen Winslow, Joe Jurevicius, Jason Wright, Audra Davis. Is Braylon Edwards next? Next year is a contract year, and it appears that Braylon doesn't want to sign with the Browns again. So, why keep him around when we could get something for him this year? I know...we don't have a lot of quality WRs on the roster. But, if we rely on Braylon's potential, we might as well trade him for draft picks. And if I remember correctly, Braylon couldn't even catch a cold last season. Is Donte Stallworth leaving? After his accident, no one knows his future. Lastly, many experts believe that one of the QBs will be traded. Well, stay tuned.

I know. I was just as confused when you heard the news that controversial wide receiver Terrell Owens had been signed by the Buffalo Bills. For a player with a troublesome history like Owens, this might be his last chance to redeem himself and prove he can play nice with others. For a team that barely gets any national attention, Buffalo just cannon-balled into the media pool. I did not see this coming. Oakland? Yes. Al Davis loves stockpiling problem children. Then it’s always a surprise when they’re a problem and are released a year later. Buffalo? Dick Jauron is the model of calm and non-confrontational. Trent Edwards is a second year quarterback whose growth could be stunted if T.O. starts acting up early. Is this a good acquisition for the Bills? Well, to answer simply: maybe.

Hurray for the CAA and FCS (Division 1-AA)! They are all over this year’s NFL final four.
Quick Aside:
I am a die-hard James Madison University (JMU) fan. My wife and I both attended JMU. She graduated. I had a great time for a number of years. Growing up I was not a fan of any major college team. I did not become dedicated to one until I started attending a mid-sized Division 1-AA school (screw the NCAA FCS new-speak) in central Virginia. So because of all that I follow JMU and their conference, the CAA.

So, another year, another Buffalo Bills season without the playoffs. The Buffalo Bills finished 7-9 for the 3rd straight season. I thought the point of the NFL was to try to constantly improve on your team, not stay the same. I mean, I can understand the New England Patriots not being able to finish 16-0 every season, but 7-9 is terrible. The Buffalo Bills and the Detroit Lions are now the only 2 teams who have not made the playoffs since the 1999-2000 season (The longest playoff droubt's currently in the NFL). Now, Ralph Wilson Sr. has decided to stick with the current coaching staff, and hope to build on a team, that is just one or two things away from being a contender.

The Buffalo Bills have continually given the faithful, blaze orange clad, Genny Light drinking fans in Buffalo a steady stream of heartache through bad management, coaching decisions and poor drafting. The trend has somewhat been reversed as of late but some of these decisions still loom large. These decisions also seem to rack up numbers in the loss column and continually prevent the Bills from making the playoffs. How the Bills choose who they draft and when is beyond me and somehow it leads to the losing trend. Thirty eight to be exact through the 2007 season.

In the NFL, stability is key, if you look at all the great team, they all have one thing in common, STABILITY. In the past decade, the Buffalo Bills have had 4 head coaches, which gives us an average of 2 1/2 years per coach. Now, compare that to the most recent dynasty of the NFL, the New England Patriots. The Patriots have only had 2 head coaches in the past 10 years. Most of you fans are probably saying that it is easy to keep your job, if you are winning, but as the Bills shown, it is not always wins that lets you keep your job.

Why is BenJarvus Green-Ellis not playing?
It’s a trend that started the moment Sammy Morris was able to play again. With the nine-year back’s return to health, the rookie free agent has been sent to the bench. He now only sees carries in a Boston Celtics “Gino” role: BJGE dances only after the game is won.

The losses have outweighed the wins. Yes, Mike Singletary has inspired this team to play better, Shaun Hill looks like a competent NFL starter and Frank Gore continues to be Frank Gore. But still, the team is 3-8 and is just 1-3 under Singletary since he took over for the fired Mike Nolan last month. The 49ers have not had a winning season since, gulp, 2002 and have seen Dennic Erickson, Mike Nolan, and now Mike Singletary attempt to lead the team back to glory. A revolving door at wide receiever and offensive coordinator, to go along with no consistency at quarterback, have really hampered the team. 2006 may be the best season the 49ers have had since 2002 but even then that team only won 7 games. Fans will claim the team would have been even better in 2007 if Norv Turner had stayed and Alex Smith continued to develop. Still, a great player will still be great, coaching changes or not. That's my take. Norv Turner should never have been hired by the Chargers, and could be available for a coordinator position real soon. Okay, so we aren't here to talk about all of the 49ers short comings since Steve Mariucci was canned. There is a game to be played on Sunday vs. the 6-5 Buffalo Bills. Right?

This was bound to happen.
For the second week in a row, QB Matt Cassel threw for 400 yards and three touchdowns. This from a guy that looked so bad against San Diego that practically all fans were calling for his head. Now Cassel is at the head of the class as every Pats fans' favorite player. It's at the point that now people think New England should re-sign Cassel and trade Tom Brady.

Is this game against Miami a must win?
Personally I hate that phrase because it suggests that if a team loses the game, there's no hope for the rest of the season. I don't think that's the case for the Pats. They stand at 6-4 and while one loss hurts their chances of reaching the playoffs, it doesn't completely kills their chances of advancing to the second season.

The Cleveland Browns went in to Buffalo for a show down with the Bills. The First play was from Trent Edwards to the Defense. Trent Edwards threw three total in the game. The Browns where able to move the ball, yet Brady did not get a touchdown pass this week. The Game came down to a close one, with the deciding factor was a missed field goal. So Brady Golden Domer Quinn is now 1-1 in his early carrer.

Anyone somewhat familiar with college football surely is well aware of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). The BCS ranks the top college programs based on a rankings, college polls, and computer selection methods. The top 2 BCS ranked teams at the end of the college season qualify for the right to play in the National Championship. Over the years it has had its fair share of hits (USC vs Texas a couple of years ago) to downright misses (see Miami vs Nebraska) but has always provided the sports world with controversy and something to talk about. Now imagine the BCS being used in the NFL? One can only dream of the madness it could create. The NFL will always have playoffs, the league would die without it, but here is a look at what the NFL BCS rankings could look like following week 8.

Of particular note, at least for myself, is the Miami Dolphin schedule.

First reaction: WOW. We knew the Pats had a relatively easy list of opponents in 2008 and it looks like NFL has gone out of its way to ensure the Pats front office is happy with how they handled 4 west coast trips in one season. By dividing the west coast games into two trips of back-to-backers the Pats travel has been cut in half. They will undoubtedly remain on the west coast in between those games and avoid major jet lag. Here's our game by game analysis:

There's a lot of talk going on, starting with the Miami Dolphins talking contract with Jake Long and Vernon Gholston. And the talk that died down between Dallas and Tennessee has sparked back up.

As many of you might be aware I find NFL mock drafts to be somewhat of a waste of time (scroll down for earlier post) but I can't claim to even be a respectable football blogger without posting a mock of my own. So, without further ado, here's how I see the NFL Draft going down in t-minus 25 days...

What better day to release a mock draft than on April Fools Day? No one takes these seriously anyway. Even funnier, people do this as if it has any reliability. Yet every year fans and experts can't resist to make an attempt at predicting who goes where in the first round. It's crazy, really.

With the NFL season at its conclusion, I find myself in a reflective mood. I naturally think about the missed opportunities of my beloved Jets, some of the most spectacular plays of the year, and the biggest off-the-field fiascos. This season, however, I find myself thinking of Kevin Everett, the Buffalo Bills’ tight end who was severely injured on the second half kickoff of their week 1 game versus the Denver Broncos. All year long, sportswriters and analysts wanted to call Brett Favre’s resurgence the biggest storyline of the 2007 campaign. Others wanted to dub the Patriots’ pursuit of perfection as the ultimate subplot to the season. I, however, cannot think of a bigger story, a more compelling tale of human triumph, than that of Everett.

It's over, or is it?
If Brett Favre has really chucked his last off-balance, ill-advised pass downfield into three defenders and an opening the size of a kicking tee while being draped by two hoggies thrice his size, somewhere there's a fat lady singing.

The Patriots signed another Buffalo Bill free agent today - Cornerback Jason Webster.

I understand that football's a rough game, I played it. But damn, can anyone that's good at it stay healthy? Take a look at the players missing this year's pro bowl, it looks like the 2015-2020 Hall of Fame inductions.

The Super Bowl this year has many people predicting an easy Patriots win, even though there is a general acknowledgement that the Giants will bring a solid game plan and sound execution to the contest. Despite the consensus that the Giants are worthy of being in the game on Sunday after an impressive playoff run, almost every NFL fan and analyst has resigned him or herself to the fact that they are just 100% outmatched. Oh, how wrong they are.

It was an ugly win, but important nevertheless. Not only did it get the Browns closer to the NFL postseason, but also it showed that they are learning how to win the tough games.
You’d think that a team from Buffalo would be ready for a snow-filled game, but the Bills didn’t seem like it at all. They were essentially embarrassing to watch, almost as bad were the Bills fans that came to the sports bar wearing Buffalo Sabres jerseys…really. But more importantly, the Browns came away with the win in turbulent weather. And if the increasingly realistic Browns playoffs hopes come to fruition, they will need to be ready to play in adverse conditions like they did today.
